OBJECTIVES: We planned a prospective-randomized trial to compare effect of modified McDonald and McDonald suture technique on the pregnancy outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients were randomized into two groups; group I (n=40) were cerclaged at points 12 and 6'o clock positions on the cervix, group II (n=30) were cerclaged at four points at 12, 9, 6 and 3 o'clock positions with mersilen under inhaler anesthesia. Complications and duration of the operation, gestational week at the operation, delivery week, and pregnancy losses were analyzed.
RESULTS: Characteristics of patients were similar in both of the groups (p>0,05). The mean duration of the procedure was 9.3±1.5 minutes in group I and 12.3±1.9 minutes in group II (p<0.001). The delivery week of subjects were significantly different between group I (36.9±2.6 week) and group II (33.0±82 week) (p=0.006) however, take a baby rate was similar in group I (%97.5) and group II (%90), respectively (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION: Modified McDonald suture at two points results in more term deliveries, although take a baby rate is similar. It is easier to apply, and less invasive than traditional McDonald suture.
